«‘Uday ibn ‘Umayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If any of you is assigned by us to a position but conceals a needle or more from us, it will amount to misappropriation and he will be called upon to restore it on the Day of Judgment." A black man from the Ansār stood up - I can still see him - and said: "O Messenger of Allah, take back your assignment from me." The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What has happened to you?" The man replied: "I heard you say such-and-such." The Prophet replied: "I say that even now: Whosoever from you is appointed by us to a position, he should render an account of everything, big or small, and whatever he is given therefrom, he should take, and he should desist from taking what is unlawful."»

Explanation

The meaning in a few plain lines

If someone is appointed by us to a position of collecting the income of Zakah or the booty of war and he conceals from us a needle or less, then this amounts to misappropriation, and he will (have to) produce it on the Day of Judgment. Then a black man from the Ansār stood up and asked the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) to release him of his assignment. He said: "What has happened to you?" The man said: "I heard you say such-and-such (the previous Hadīth)." He said: "And I say that (even) now: Whosoever from you is appointed by us to a position of authority, he should bring everything, big or small. He is to take what is assigned to him; otherwise, he should restrain from appropriating what is not his."

He said: "I said what the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allah admits to Paradise any Muslim whose goodness is testified to by four people.' Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a donkey that had been branded on the face passed by the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) so he said: “May Allah curse the one who branded it.” Another narration by Imām Muslim reads: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade striking the face and branding on the face."Narrated by Muslim
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "While a man was walking on a road, he became very thirsty. He found a well and went down in it and drank. When he came out, there was a dog panting and eating moist earth out of thirst. The man said: 'This dog is so thirsty just as I was.' So, he went down into the well, filled his shoe with water and held it in his mouth until he climbed out. Then, he gave the dog water to drink. Allah accepted his deed and, thus, forgave him." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, are we rewarded for taking care of animals?" He said: "There is a reward for (quenching the thirst of) every living creature." Another narration reads: "Allah accepted his deed and, thus, forgave him and admitted him into Paradise." Another narration reads: "Once a dog was moving around a well, and it was about to die from thirst. When a prostitute from Children of Israel saw it, she removed her shoe, filled it with water, and gave it to the dog to drink. Abu Sa‘īd al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever of you sees something evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able, then with his tongue; and if he is not able, then with his heart, and that is the weakest of faith."Narrated by Muslim
عَنْ أَبي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ {وَأَنْذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ} [الشعراء: 214]: «يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ، اشْتَرُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ مِنَ اللهِ، لَا أُغْنِي عَنْكُمْ مِنَ اللهِ شَيْئًا، يَا بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، لَا أُغْنِي عَنْكُمْ مِنَ اللهِ شَيْئًا، يَا عَبَّاسَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، لَا أُغْنِي عَنْكَ مِنَ اللهِ شَيْئًا، يَا صَفِيَّةُ عَمَّةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ، لَا أُغْنِي عَنْكِ مِنَ اللهِ شَيْئًا، يَا فَاطِمَةُ بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللهِ، سَلِينِي بِمَا شِئْتِ لَا أُغْنِي عَنْكِ مِنَ اللهِ شَيْئًا».متفق عليه
Shaqīq ibn Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) reported: Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give us a reminder every Thursday. A man said to him: "O Abu ‘Abdur-Rahmān, we would like for you to give us a reminder every day!" He said: "What prevents me from doing so is that I dislike to bore you. I give you an admonition every now and then, just as the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was giving them to us, out of fear that we might become bored."Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim
